This mad scene made the world mad.
Fastest vibrato (name any female singer with faster vibrato than mado robin)
What a talent. Unsurpassed. Rip
The dying Lucy Ashton....💔 BRAVISSIMA MADO
I had the wonderfull luck to proforme with her at the Kings Théâtre Edinburgh 21st Edinburgh Festival.I was the solo dancer.she and Richard take me with them to see the New York Ballet.we had a very wonderfull time it was just fantastique and magique to work with them . Edward Arckless ex Royal Oper Ballet Covent Garden London and conservatoire de Ville de Paris France
Fantastic!,👍
Poppopppppppppppppppppppppopppppppppppppppppooopppppppppppppppppppoppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp😊o
Back when the registers were properly balanced.
Zinka really had a very high opinion of herself. Too high actually.... Meh
"The way people sang...today, I wonder." Truer words have never been spoken about those who perform puccini and then attempt the high art of bel canto masters. Even those during her time trying to screech the notes and phrasing/legato. Absolute ear sore
impressive. PURISSIMA, almost no (hateful) vibrato
Flawless❤❤❤❤
Again, endlessly grateful these things were recorded.
she's my great grandmother's favorite opera singer, and my name-sake.
The breath control is amazing - Joan's voice floats on a seemingly endless supply.
Her trill is really something magical.
Nothing better in female duets....not another song comes close.
Genial… divino …! Desde Montevideo

Great!🙃 She was on fire that night!
Simply fabulous the greatest ever
I’m still pretty new to opera and I am so grateful for these recordings that allow me the tremendous privilege of listening to incredible singers of the past. La Stupenda indeed! I wish I had been able to hear this live.
Simply delightful
Utmost beauty talking about dramatic soprano!
An extraordinary singer/actress speaking honestly and fascinatingly about her art and her approach to what she does. An appreciative word is due to Charles Rose for asking the right questions and turning this filmed interview into a proper conversation ; she seems very comfortable with him.
Maria mentions Bellini. He was nicknamed "the swan of Catania" for a reason. Chopin modeled his intricately woven legatos by remembering Vincenzo. This is why I detest verismo vocalists singing bel canto era works. Just too different but the converse isn't true. Reminds me of Beethoven speaking on Clementi and others. If you only know mozart, you still need to study Clementi whereas if you study Clementi, you needn't study the rest. Yes, I am paraphrasing however the point is made and the same goes for this video. Not to knock puccini around but there is a reason why his bohemian opera is sung ad nauseum instead of Beatrice di Tenda or La Straniera or Caterina Cornaro or Marino Faliero or even early Verdi such as Attila or Giovanna d'Arco. Some require such extraordinary talent and hardwork while the other requires hitting notes loudly.
Love these old reminders of what we once had😊
Callas was acting with her voice. That's why people of all generations admire her.
The Elvino, heard here in only a few notes between the aria and the cabaletta, is a certain Signor Pavarotti. . . .
Listening to her ease with the beginnings of high lying phrases - what in vocal pedagogy is referred to as the 'onset' - I'm reminded of a comment made about Melba in her prime. That she simply opened her mouth and the voice just 'appeared'. Melba and Sutherland are in no way comparable as to vocal endowment, but it's interesting that Sutherland's mother studied with a pupil of Marchesi, Melba's teacher. Sutherland always stated that though she didn't study formally in her youth, she mimicked her mother's voice and sang all of the Marchesi exercises. Anyway, Sutherland is in her glorious prime here - the vocalism is astonishing. I heard her 4 times in the 1970's and she had a formidably high standard - it's almost unheard for there to be reports of a 'bad night'. She had such a rock solid technique that she only cancelled when absolutely necessary. Maybe 10 times in her 4 decade career.
Miss Sutherland herself said, "No one deliberately gives a bad performance." I'm sure we've ALL made mistakes doing our "jobs" or performing. Hit a wrong note, singing, playing the piano, violin or whatever, misjudged the distance on a piano keyboard, misjudged a distance while partnering in ballet, felt something was about to go wrong while dancing and faulted as a result. I've done all of these. The frustrating part is sometimes, it's being recorded! And there it is.. forever.
Marilyn Horne and Eileen Farrell (RIP) were the most down to earth major American divas of their generation. No hauteur, no artifice, no airs.
the greatest singer ever to have walked the Earth
The only thing disappointing about Dame Joan's glorious voice is the lower 5th where she lost all quality. She titled her chin forward and made a thin disconnected sound of inferior quality. It is such a shame that Bonynge, her vocal coach allowed her to do this. It is very much the wrong sound for a Verdi soprano.
The best dramatic coloratura soprano is history
Even if Sutherland forgot lyrics no difference one could never understand a word she was singing anyway. Beautiful sound though.
Although I love Sutherland's work in her usual repertoire, this makes me feel that there was a great loss in her specializing so much in those bel canto operas. For example, this makes me wonder what she could have done with Magda in Menotti's The Consul, especially the great scena To This We've Come. I know that we are lucky to have had what she did with her 40 years but one can always wish.
Voice like a bloody train whistle. The cast and orchestra stand no chance.
The only thing I don’t like about Joan Sutherland is she never sang Rosina in Barbiere, but there is an old kinescope where she sings Una voce poco fa”. It’s fabulous!!!❤❤❤❤
👏👏👏👏👏👏
On their worst day, they’re still better than a lot of people. No such thing as a perfect performance even at the highest of levels!
C'est tres bien vocalement parlant .Mais a t on vraiment ici l'esprit " mittel Europa " ?
2:26 look what they need just to mimic a fraction of her power!
what song is this?
It's part of the mad scene from Lucia di Lammemoor
